In FATE Condensed, there are four types of actions you can take:

Overcome

Use Overcome to get past obstacles or achieve goals using a relevant skill.

  • Roll: Skill + 4dF vs. Target difficulty
  • Success: You achieve your goal
  • Failure: You fail, or succeed at a cost

Example: Picking a lock (Burglary), climbing a fence (Athletics), researching archives (Lore)

Create an Advantage

Create or discover aspects that you or allies can invoke for bonuses.

  • Roll: Skill + 4dF vs. Opposition
  • Success: Create aspect with one free invoke
  • Success with Style: Create aspect with two free invokes

Example: “Distracted Guards”, “Weak Structural Point”, “Knows the Secret”

Attack

Attempt to harm an opponent or overcome their defenses.

  • Roll: Attack skill + 4dF vs. Defend skill + 4dF
  • Success: Deal stress equal to shifts
  • Success with Style: Deal stress + boost

Example: Shooting (Shoot), punching (Fight), psychological warfare (Provoke)

Defend

React to another character’s action targeting you.

  • Roll: Defend skill + 4dF vs. Attack/Overcome roll
  • Success: You avoid the action’s effects
  • Failure: You suffer the consequences

Example: Dodging (Athletics), blocking (Fight), resisting interrogation (Will)
